Press play to hear Ramon Hurtado talk about the inspirations for his painting.
Ramon is originally from Tijuana, Mexico and was educated there until middle school. Soon thereafter, he and his family moved to San Diego, in search of better educational opportunities for him and his sister. Although he had a longstanding appreciation for drawing and painting, he didn't consider the prospect of becoming a painter until his sophomore year of high school.
It was at this time that Ramon was introduced to the paintings of the Great Masters, whose example continues to guide and influence his own work. Among his favorite artists are Dean Cornwell, Cecilia Beaux, Ilya Repin and Jose de Ribera. From these artists and from his excellent instructors, Ramon has gained a greater understanding of the lifelong process of learning to draw and paint.
As a first generation American, he continues to be fascinated by the richness of America's cultural fabric and the wide interaction of so many wonderful traditions. His greatest aspiration is to employ traditional painting skills to create work that celebrates the diversity of our global community in an elegant and refined manner.
