For many years now, the name Clifford Brown, Jr. has been synonymous with broadcasting in the San Francisco Bay area. Brown has successfully held the positions of award winning Radio Personality, award winning Program Director, Broadcast Operations Manager, National Programming Consultant, Director On Air Operations, Production Director and Broadcasting Arts Educator.
Clifford Brown, Jr. was born in Philadelphia, Pa. and raised in Los Angeles. His father was the legendary, internationally acclaimed jazz trumpeter Clifford Brown. After his father’s death, his mother La Rue Brown continued to support the music community. She raised Clifford to love and appreciate music.
As long as he can remember Brown has wanted to work in radio. "The idea of having a job where you could both entertain and enlighten people appealed to me very early. By the time I was 10, I knew I was headed for a career in radio."
What a career it’s been! Brown got his first professional job at the age of 18, and before he turned 30 had been awarded the prestigious Golden Mic for being the San Francisco Bay Area’s top radio personality. Brown has also been recognized for his programming acumen, having received the AMPEX AWARD OF EXCELLENCE as the nation’s top jazz Program Director and has been nominated for a STELLAR AWARD for major market gospel radio station of the year. In 1996 he received the Beverly Anne Johnson Media Award for his many years of being a "positive Black male role model" and in 2007 was named a “Living Legend” by the Black Music Association for his work on air and in the community. Since 1979 Clifford Brown, Jr. has been an extremely popular radio personality with adult audiences.
Of all his accomplishments, Brown particularly enjoys working with musicians, either as an interviewer or as master of ceremonies. He’s had the privilege of interviewing or introducing thousands of jazz, gospel and R&B artists. The list of musicians he’s worked with ranges from Miles Davis to Stevie Wonder, Kirk Franklin to Dizzy Gillespie and Michael Jackson. Brown remains in demand as both a host and interviewer nationally & locally.
On a more personal note Clifford is passionate about his work in the community including mentoring youth with incarcerated parents (OreMi Mentoring Program) and working to improve health in the inner city (Healthy Oakland Project).
Today Brown spends most of his time running radio stations KDIA (Christian Talk) & KDYA (Gospel) in the San Francisco Bay Area and programming, producing and hosting jazz shows for KCSM Jazz 91 FM.
