Firmly rooted in Fort Worth, Texas, Tamela Mann was born the youngest of fourteen children. At the age of eight, Mann began mimicking the singing talents of her mother. By the time she was twelve years old, Mann was singing in her church’s adult choir.
A few years later, Mann became a member of Kirk Franklin and The Family and a voice on the smash hit Whatcha Lookin’ 4, which dominated Billboard’s Top 200 and was number three on the R&B charts and number one on Contemporary Christian and Gospel charts.
In 1996, Mann joined the gospel musical cast of the stage play comedy He Say…She Say…But What Does God Say? directed by three-time NAACP Image Award recipient, screenwriter and producer David E. Talbert.
By the year 2000, Mann was cast in Tyler Perry’s hilarious stage play hit I Can Do Bad All By Myself in which she played the character of Cora — Madea’s spiritual but giggly daughter and the lovable wife of Mr. Brown. Always the encourager, Cora is the spiritual glue of the family and operatically captures everyone’s attention, including the audience, when she delivers thunderous songs throughout parts of the play to make her point.
In a relatively short period of time, Mann’s portrayal of Cora has paved the way for the role to become a principal character in Perry’s successful stage play comedies Madea’s Family Reunion and Madea’s Class Reunion.
In 2001, Mann played in Perry’s musical drama/comedy Diary of a Mad Black Woman. She played the character of Myrtle — a feisty, preachy woman never short on words.
An aria singer and a remarkable actress, Mann demonstrates her gifts and calling from above. And while she does enjoy the fruits of her labor, her sweetest joy comes from relaxing days spent with her husband of seventeen years, David Mann, and their four adoring children.
