JJ Hairston, a native of Brooklyn, NY, is the director of Youthful Praise and a member of the Temple C.O.G.I.C., International in Bridgeport CT. The congregation worships under the leadership of two gospel music legends, Bishop J.C. White and Evangelist Gloria White.
As a child he attended Mt. Sinai Cathedral, C.O.G.I.C. where his grandfather, Bishop Clarence Sexton Sr. served as Pastor. But Hairston’s love for gospel music began at his current church when his friend, Shawn Brown, asked him to come to choir rehearsal. It was then that James gave his heart, as well as his voice and talent, to the Lord. Inspired by the writing ability of both Brown and Bishop White, James began writing his own songs such as "He is the Spirit" and "Garment of Praise." Since then, James has been called upon to write and direct for many well-known artists.
Hairston is well known for his exuberant style of directing and singing, recognizable from the choir "James Hall and Worship and Praise" in which he was a member for several years.
Hairston’s ability to craft tunes with timeless melodies and timely lyrics is aptly demonstrated by the title track “Resting in His Promise” on his most recent release with Youthful Praise. Youthful Praise’s fifth album not only offers the trademark east coast choir sound, expansive melodies and inspired lyrics for which Youthful Praise has set the standard, but also offers the contagious energy of driving rock infused tunes and plenty of foot stompin’ rhythm to satisfy the traditional gospel music fan.
Hairston may exceed the expectations of even the most committed fans as he takes them on a musical journey that will stir their hearts to worship and lift their arms in praise. The novice gospel fan will discover the joy of being swept up into a well-woven tapestry of praise and worship.
It is Hairston’s ultimate desire that young people would see him as an active young man, yet as a servant of the Lord, coming to realize you don't have to be old to be saved.
