Over the last decade, Kelly Price has emerged as one of the most dynamic and celebrated female voices in the R&B pantheon. With her church-trained wail, Price has become known for soulful ballads such as "Friend of Mine," "You Should've Told Me" and her 2000 remake of Shirley Murdock's classic, "As We Lay." In recent years, Price has also become equally known for gospel tunes such as "Healing" from the #1 2006 CD This is Who I Am and "God's Gift" from a Top Ten collaboration with harpist Jeff Majors.
The second of three children born to Rev. Joseph Price and his evangelist wife, Claudia, Price hails from a long line of Church of God in Christ (COGIC) ministers. Her grandfather, Bishop Jerome Norman, was the pastor of the Full Gospel Mission COGIC in Queens. Therefore, it's no surprise that the little girl who grew up in the projects of Queens first sang in church at the age of six when she was nicknamed "Little Mahalia Jackson." She made her first recording at the age of ten. By the time that she turned 18 years old, Price was traveling the globe as one of pop diva Mariah Carey's background singers. She sang behind Carey on such hits as "Dream Lover," "Always Be My Baby" and "Anytime You Need A Friend."
From there, Price became one of the top shelf Triple A studio session singers. She backed urban legends on such classics as Notorious B.I.G.'s "Mo Money, Mo Problems." She also developed key music industry contacts that allowed her to place the songs she wrote on various soundtracks and artist projects. She began writing songs for a number of R&B artists and rappers such as Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Faith Evans, R. Kelly, Puff Daddy, SWV, Notorious B.I.G., Gerald Levert and Brian McKnight among others. She also has written the gospel songs: "Just for Me" for Karen Clark Sheard and "Thank You Lord" for Mary J. Blige.
Price was touring with the Isley Brothers when offers for recording deals started coming her way. Ronald Isley persuaded her to work with him and R. Kelly via Isley's production deal with Island Def Jam Records. The CD Soul of a Woman made its debut in the fall of 1998. The platinum-seller featured the #1 smash "Friend of Mine" (featuring a cameo by Isley in the sinister Mr. Bigg character he introduced on R. Kelly's "Down Low Nobody Has to Know" video and the follow-up hits "It's Gonna Rain" and "Secret Love." In the same period, Price joined Whitney Houston and Faith Evans on "Heartbreak Hotel" that was a #1 Club and R&B hit.
Price's 2000 sophomore CD, Mirror, was accompanied by a new image. In a Jet magazine cover story, she talked candidly about losing 100 pounds and adopting a new health regimen to keep her weight in control. The album featured the hits "As We Lay" and "Love Sets You Free." In 2002, she followed-up with the Priceless CD that featured the R&B hit "He Proposed." Over the years, Price has appeared on gospel CDs by Donald Lawrence & the Tri-City Singers and Doug & Melvin Williams. However, she finally released her own best-selling gospel project This is Who I Am in 2006 and followed it with her inspirational book, Inscriptions of My Heart. Price continues to play a leading role in the gospel music industry. Aside from compiling songs for her next project and attending music conventions, she performs at church functions and has appeared on top rated gospel television programs such as BET's "Celebration of Gospel" and TV One's "The Gospel of Music with Jeff Majors."
